Zombie Camouflage

Last Sunday I found 28 Days Later on sale for $6. Then the other day, I decided to watch as much as I could during breakfast before I set off for work. Then it got me thinking about zombies again, and I began going through scenarios in my head.

Of course, part of being prepared is trawling the zombie sites. After watching the first half of 28 Days Later, I went to see the IMDB forums to see what was new. There is a thread called “Re: You have 3 Hours before the outbreak? What do you do!” [sic]. So what would Jesus do?

Among all the good ideas, here’s one that, as a homeowner, caught my eye:

I would…

1. camouflage my house

2. keep a nice stash of food and water

3. when infected approach, play dead

How does #1 happen? Turns out, I am not the only one wondering:

How the hell do you camouflage a house in three hours? What do you make it look like? A cake, the Bolivian navy on manouveres in the South Pacific, a red an white striped golfing umbrella, a female aardvark? I mean if you live in a bungalow its [sic] a possibility…

Back to the drawing board.

i think the guy who said “go to costco right before it closes and hide so everyone leaves, then u have the place to yourself…you wait for it to blow over” seemed fairly intelligent. you dont’ need any money for supplies; and i am thinking costco isn’t the first place zombies will go…tho it would make for some interesting chaos as they invade.

well, i should have read one post more. walmart makes way more sense than costco:

round up 40 capable citizens and take over a super-walmart

this is the best place to ride it out because:
food and water
plenty of guns & ammo, and other melee weapons of all sorts (axes, bats, chainsaws)
tools and construction materials
sturdy cinderblock/concrete destruction is too secure for a wall breach
flat roof for eventual helicopter landing and extraction after the siege as well as elevated position to defend from zombie attacks
surrounded by large parking lot, which acts as a good buffer of visual space

split the group into teams and use your three hours:

-build legitimate barricades across all entrances using bricks/mortar with wood supports from the garden department. this is a standard problem in zombie movies, as the characters never have access to good supplies. walmart can provide the necessary materials for legitimate defense against zombies.

-rent several RV trucks and park them in the auto repair garage before shutting the garage doors and barricading them as well. over the months of the siege you can use the tools and materials found in walmart to upgrade the exterior of these RVs such that in case of a speedy exit, you have capable anti-zombie vehicles. upgrades include complete metal siding and cow catchers (convert inventory and shelving into armor plating) and possible gun mounts/ports

-go to a nearby petrol station and fill tanks with gasoline should you need to make the aforementioned journey to a safe zone

this should put you in a good position to survive the zombie attack for many months, so long as your barricades are truly well made. the biggest issue you will then face is uprisings within the group (ie: if people want to venture out and find survivors&family which exposes you to risk), so group selection is the most crucial and complicated factor

oh, and before your blog entry i had no idea about comments on IMDb. Thanks for adding yet another distraction to my work day that never seems to produce.

Really, getting your zombie-proofing advice from IMDB? I would have thought YOU would be teaching accredited correspondence courses on the subject by now.

Bluewyvern: lol, no, I read all the other sites, but I love people who love the genre enough to not take this stuff too seriously.

Lyn: Yeah, I like the Costco idea, too. Though I suspect that Canadian Costcos don’t have guns.
